BUENOS AIRES, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Paraguay international left-back Junior Alonso has parted ways with Boca Juniors to spend time with his family during the coronavirus pandemic.
The 27-year-old still had a month remaining on his 18-month loan from French Ligue 1 club Lille, with whom he is contracted until June next year.
"It is a fact that I will not continue at the club. They understood my position," Alonso told a Paraguayan radio station on Friday. "I just want to be with my family, the club was very good to me."
Boca thanked Alonso for his dedication and said they "regretted" not having exercised an option to secure the defender on a permanent move.
"Certain personal problems prevented him from staying in Argentina .... [but] our wish was for Junior Alonso to continue at the club," the Buenos Aires outfit said in a statement.
Alonso made 33 appearances for Boca Juniors across all competitions, having joined them from Spain's Celta Viga, where he spent a year on loan.
He did not say where he might play next but ruled out a return to Paraguyan football, where he has been linked with Olimpia and former club Cerro Porteno.
